Rio Dulce – February 2011 Issue Red River Review

Rio Dulce
by Liz Tucker

on the banks of the Rio Dulce
girls and women
abandoned by families
desperate for food
spread their legs wide
their minds clamped tight.

strangers come before them
grunting and snorting.
they kick and buck
whinnying like wild mustangs
spooked on the open plains.
inside these girls sing distant lullabies
already palming the cold quetzal
in their hard calloused hands
with nobody to hear them hum.
